I’ll start. How are you building up your client base? We are in a fairly small community where for most runners a Coach isn’t a priority.

Gregg, Andre mentioned the story about McKirdy Trained’s recent success. I know James built a large following coaching programs out of his local running store. He’s also really leveraged social media, particularly Instagram to build his brand. I like the idea of offering a free training session every now and then where you can customize a workout for individuals on the app so they experience the value in having custom training and guidance. Maybe schedule these workouts around the time runners typically begin training for popular local, regional or major road racing events like Boston or NYC.

Gregg, there is a post on news.vdoto2.com today that is related to your question. A lot of coaches build off of their networks. I’ve seen coaches drop pamphlets off at local running stores and communicate their services on their social media channels. I’m sure other coaches have had success in other ways. Hi,

have used VDoT tabes for some time and have a question re Firstbeat analytics VO2 estimate and race predictors on watches like garmin 620.

My RACE vdot is about 43, but my 620 suggests 49 based on sub max aerobic running. Which should I use for training? I should add I have not been able to do many all out races this last year.

    Hi Chris,

Keep in mind your VDOT and max are two different readings. Since VDOT is based on a race result we think of it as a more holistic measurement of fitness. Now it’s possible your race didn’t accurately represent your current fitness (consider weather, course conditions, how well you raced, whether it was a true max effort, etc.). Runners with the same VO2max can have very different race results due to differences in economy and/or mental toughness. These factors would be reflected more in a VDOT score.
